Backyards are truly wonderful. If you’re lucky enough to have one on your property, you probably use it frequently for playing with the kids or the dog, hosting neighborhood cookouts, and throwing summer parties. Whatever you use your backyard for, you can decorate your fence to add more pizazz to an already great space. Here are five decoration ideas that won’t ruin your fence!

Flower Pots

Where do flowers grow best? Outside of course! You can add some color and vibrancy to your backyard with potted flowers and plants. There are pots made specifically to hang on fences that make a great choice for homeowners who don’t want to nail or screw anything into their new wooden fence. If you don’t mind a few holes here and there, you can screw in some pot/planter hangers, wire-framed planters, or other pots that are designed for mounting. In our opinion, the hanging options are best for a few reasons. First and foremost, you won’t have any damage to your gorgeous new fence because there’s no drilling involved. In addition, you can bring the plants inside if the weather is rough. This will help your flowers/plants stay alive longer so that they stay pretty even in the cold, very hot, or wet weather.

Painted Metal Art

Another super popular way to decorate your wooden, vinyl, or iron fence is to use some painted metal art! You can find metal artwork that is already painted, or you can get creative and add some color yourself! If you’re feeling extra crafty, feel free to try to make the artwork by hand from start to finish. Some popular pieces of work that make great additions to a gorgeous fence are metal flowers, signs, wildlife, and silhouettes. If you have an outdoor living space, you can incorporate the same color scheme into your fence art, or you can choose bright colors that make you happy every time you look out your window into the backyard. Be sure to use paint that is suitable for outdoor furniture and items to prevent damage caused by weather. The classic metal look is awesome as well, but be aware that your decorations can rust if left out in the rain and dew. If you really love the natural metal vibe, consider using a clear sealant to protect it. Keep your metal art looking its best so your fence is always decorated!

Lights

Who doesn’t love lights? There are so many options for lights that will dress up a fence in your backyard. We love strings of chunkier light bulbs, but dainty fairy lights can look incredible too. For a more outdoorsy feel, put tea lights or fairy lights inside mason jars and hang them on your fence with some nails and some wire. You can add color to the yard by painting the mason jars with a light coat of paint in your favorite shades. The lights will shine through and give a soft, colorful glow! If you’re looking to decorate for a party or event, up the ante with bigger, bolder lights! You can find novelty string lights of flamingos for a luau, American flags for the 4th of July, Snowflakes for winter celebrations, and so much more. Light up the backyard fence for some amazing ambiance at your next party (or to just hang out).

Ornamental Trellis

Many people choose to plant gardens up against their backyard fence. If you’re one of these people, an ornamental trellis is a perfect decoration for you! Nothing makes a wooden or vinyl fence fit in more than an ornate trellis covered with vines, flowers, fruits, or vegetables! One great thing about trellises is that even when the plants are not in bloom, your fence will be dressed up with swirls of metal or intricate designs. For the warmer months, there are a few plants that do exceptionally well with a trellis. For fruits and vegetables, you can plant tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, peas, squash, grapes, and more. If you prefer flowers, there are numerous varieties that will climb the trellis and spread out. According to Plant Care Today the top five flowering plants are Jewel of Africa Nasturtium, Mandevilla, Campsis Radicans, Henryi Clematis, and Clematis. Add a bit more life and color to your yard with any of these plants on an ornamental trellis!

Wall Shelf Herb Garden

Last but certainly not least, we have a wall shelf herb garden. With an old wall shelf and some planters you can set up a killer herb garden in your backyard. You can use hooks to support the shelf, or rest it on some nails. Neither option will do too much damage to your wooden fence, and we have a feeling you’ll fall in love with the herb garden and have no reason to take it down! Hooks are probably the easiest option if you have a vinyl fence so that you don’t have to worry about nailing into it. It might be a bit challenging to incorporate this decoration if you have an iron fence, but it is certainly doable.

Try this variation; get an old standing shelf and attach it to the iron bars with straps, zip ties, or metal hooks! Plant some herbs in small pots and store them on the shelves! When you need some herbs, you’ll be able to bring in the specific pot you need rather than having to go outside to gather your ingredients. You can paint your shelves to match the fence, or add some bright shades to make your backyard even more fun!
